Kiwanis – Sponsored Youth Programs
One of our primary activities in the St. Anthony Kiwanis club is the sponsorship of three youth service clubs. These are the Key Club at St. Anthony Village High School, the Builders Club at St. Anthony Village Middle School, and the K-Kids Club at Wilshire Park Elementary School.
The Key Club currently has about fifty members. The activities include a wide variety of service projects in the community and the school, as well as some fund raising projects. Examples of service project are:
- The Husky Paw project – They have created a path consisting of “Husky Paw Prints” on the walkway from the school to the football field. They sell the right to put a few words (generally supportive of the football team and the players) in each paw print. Thus, it is a fund raising project. The money they raise is all given to the school to fund specific needs.
- New Fire-pit and Benches at Silverwood Park
- Birthday Bags for Northeast Foodshelf
- Reading at New Visions School
- Adopt a Family
The Builders Club is a community and school service club in the Middle School. The approximately fifty members are in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Some of their current projects are:
- Calendar Distribution Project – A Fund Raiser
- Visiting Residents at the Nursing Home
- Sponsor an Activity Night for Middle Schoolers
- Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army
The K-Kids Club has membership of about forty fifth-graders and they also do community and school service projects. Some of their projects are:
- Blankets for Animals for the Humane Society –
- Teacher Appreciation Project
- Door Hangers for Children’s Hospital
Our club has a Kiwanis Advisor assigned to each of these clubs to help them with their meetings and their projects. Each club also has a Faculty Advisor. We also support the clubs financially.
Getting these young people involved in community and school service is not only good for the community and the school but it is also very beneficial to the kids. This early exposure to the needs of others is a good step in making them more caring individuals. The activities also give them opportunities to develop leadership skills and to learn how to work effectively on teams. They also learn about personal responsibility. It is for these reasons that we put a lot of emphasis on our support to these clubs.
